This used to be a much busier road before the traffic was diverted to the Coast Road extension.
A map dated 1898 shows a house called Wellburn which occupied the area on the right of the photographs. This was the first private house in Newcastle to be fitted with electric lighting. The part of Jesmond to the north is now known as Wellburn Park. In the older picture, heavy rainfall has caused flooding, with waves lapping against Elliott's store. |
