The Quayside and the bridges |
The Tyne Bridge is the icon of the city. It was opened in 1928. At the time, Newcastle was a busy port.
The main contractor for the construction of the bridge was the Middlesbrough company Dorman Long. In the 1999 photograph, you can see the vans of the traders preparing for the Quayside Sunday Market. Although some motor vehicles were available back in 1928, horse-drawn transport was still used extensively. |
