Westgate Road and Clayton Street |
This shows the junction of Westgate Road and Clayton Street, looking north.
Clayton Street was built in 1837 and named after the Town Clerk of Newcastle, John Clayton. Clayton helped raise the vast sums of money needed for Richard Grainger's ambitious plan to rebuild the city centre in the 1830s. Gala Bingo was previously the Majestic Dance Hall, and before that, the Picture House, which was destroyed by fire in 1919. |
